A Guide to Turkish Coffee

If you are an avid coffee drinker, chances are you have at least heard of Turkish coffee. Perhaps you have not heard of it, but you are interested in learning more about different types of coffee. Whatever the case may be, you have come to the right place as this is a guide to Turkish coffee, including what it is and how to prepare the perfect cup each time.

Turkish coffee is simply a method of preparation for unfiltered coffee. The coffee beans are roasted and finely ground and then simmered in a pot. It is served in a cup and the grounds settle in the bottom.

Turkish coffee is consumed primarily in South-Eastern Europe, Anatolia, the Caucasus, the Middle East, and in areas around the black sea. Each of these regions are influenced by Ottoman cuisine.

Making Turkish Coffee

In order to make Turkish coffee you will need the following:

  • Turkish coffee pot
  • Spoon
  • Sugar
  • Finely ground coffee

The coffee that you use should be Arabica and a medium roast because you are going to roast the coffee again while you are making the coffee. You can get this type of coffee in several ways.

One way is to purchase a Turkish grinder and grind the coffee yourself. It is important to note that a regular coffee grinder is not going to get the coffee ground into the fine powder that is necessary for Turkish coffee.

Another option is to grind the coffee at your local store. Most coffee grinders at grocers in the United States have a turkish coffee setting. You can also simply buy the coffee already ground.

The next step for making Turkish coffee is to measure out the amount of water that you will need. Place the pot of water on the stove and set it at medium high until the water heats up. Use about one or two heaping teaspoonfuls of coffee for every 3 ounces of water. When adding the coffee do not stir it at first. Simply allow the coffee to float on the top of the water. Stirring it at this point may cause it to clump.Next add as much sugar as desired. Do not stir. Once the water warms up and the coffee begins to sink to the bottom of the pot and the sugar begins to dissolve, stir it for a bit and then turn down the heat to low. You should continue to stir it several times until the brew begins to foam. When a bubble ring forms on the surface, turn the heat down more. Any bubbles that appear should be small. The water should never boil. The idea is to let a thick froth form. If the mixture boils the foam will disappear.

Try to keep the brew at the foaming stage for as long as possible without letting it boil. The more froth that is created, the better that it is going to taste. If the brew becomes too hot and starts to rise, move it away from the heat. Repeat the process of letting the foam raise and cool once or twice.

The key to the coffee maker’s art is getting the thickest layer of foam possible. One tip for maximizing the amount of foam is to pour the brew slowly and try to lift the pot higher as you continue to pour. No matter what technique is used to get the foam into the cups, it is difficult to make sure that each cup has the same amount. The cup that ends up with the most foam is considered to be the best of the group. Some people resort to using a spoon to dip out the foam into the cups to ensure equal amounts are obtained.

When it comes to preparing a good cup Turkish coffee, there should be a thick foam at the top and no noticeable particles throughout the foam or in the liquid. It is possible to wait a bit past boiling to get more flavor from the coffee, but this will lose the foam. It is possible to remove the foam and put it into cups earlier so the rest can boil for a bit longer. If choosing this method it is important to be careful that only the foam is transferred and not any of the suspended particles.

Drinking Turkish Coffee

Typically a person will drink a cup of water before indulging in Turkish coffee. The reason for this is because the water will cleanse the palate so that you can truly enjoy the flavor of the coffee.

Once you have cleansed the palate with water, make sure that you have waited a couple of minutes for the grounds of the coffee to settle at the bottom of the cup. It is now time to sit back and sip on this delicious cup of coffee. Remember, this is a drink that should be savored and drank slowly, sip by sip.
